The "Christmas Star" Explained

The "Christmas Star" Explained

You may have heard about the coming of a “Christmas Star” online. This “star” is not a star at all, but the alignment of Jupiter and Saturn from our vantage point here on Earth, which is commonly referred to as a “conjunction.” While it happens every 20 years, this particular year is special because the two will appear very close to each other, almost to the point of being indistinguishable with the naked eye.

While a nice and a slightly significant astrological event, it has no prophetic value. The memes and articles out there calling this a Biblical sign are just click-bait, or the work of conspiracists.

If you wish to see it, look to the southwest near the horizon just after sunset. The planets will be at their closest observable point on the evening of December 21st. They set shortly after twilight, so there is a very short window to observe them if it is even possible in your area. Buildings, topography, and clouds will prevent many from being able to see it.
