Meditation in a Tool Shed - A Counter to Unreasoning
Ever since humanity built its first power hierarchy, the elites at the top have browbeaten those below. This is true in practically every hierarchy that people construct. We see it in companies, schools, governments, and even in our own families. At one time or another, most of us have been on either side throughout our lives.
C. S. Lewis recognized these facts 75 years ago when he published his letter Meditation in a Toolshed. Like many of his other great works, he showcases the problem for what it really is: those in power using authority to try to establish dominance of their perspective over the others. C. S. Lewis writes and CSLewisDoodle illustrates:
We see quite a few parallels today, and some have even gone as far as cast experts as godlike. Just two days ago, I saw yet another example of the classic “how dare you question us” line of thinking. Dr. Egnor does a good job in dismantling the reprimands of Dr. Lents.
In any case, there is nothing wrong with genuine inquiry; there is plenty wrong with saying there is; and there is everything wrong with using logical fallacies to give undue credence to a theory or perspective. As always, every theory or perspective must be judged against reality on its own merits. That is the right way to acquire knowledge and find truth. God bless and stay safe everyone.
